Let's Get Crafty - Bow Print Manicure with Kailey from Mermaidens

Hello fellow Crown and Glory enthusiasts! It's Kailey from Mermaidens and I was honored when Sophie invited me to do a guest post with you lovelies! I was immediately inspired to create a nail art tutorial based on Sophie's gorgeous Pastel Glitter Hair Bows!

Nail Polishes Used in this Tutorial: Sinful Colors' Easy Going, Sally Hansen's Lacey Lilac, Sally Hansen's Chartreuse Chase, Wet 'n Wild's I Need a Refresh-Mint, Revlon's Sunshine Sparkle, & CoverGirl's Disco Dazzle. However, just about any pastelly shade of pink, purple, green, blue, and yellow will do! You will also need a white nail polish pen and some chunky glitter polish.

Paint each nail one pastel color for a base. Wait until each nail is completely dry.

Apply a generous amount of your sparkly nail polish on top! I used two coats to make it extra sparkly.

Wait until the glitter has dried and then, using a white nail polish pen, draw little bows on your ring, middle, and index finger. Volia! Pop in one of your Crown and Glory Pastel Glitter Hair Bows and you're all set! ♡

It's Business, Baby - Networking Masterclass with Cassie Lawrence

It's Business, Baby!

This week's It's Business Baby offering is the second in a two part post series from National Young Businesswoman of the Year, Cassie Lawrence. Cassie owns caricature cake topper companies Cake Top Characters, Cake Top Babies, as well as wedding blog Catching Bouquets. Cassie is also a freelance graphic designer, specialising in the wedding industry and is the Marketing Manager at Leading Women UK. She is also a member of the UCP Peer Committee and is passionate about people! She is the absolute queen of networking - whenever I find myself in a quandary regarding a networking event, I always think - 'What would Cassie do?' So if like me, you find offline networking the most difficult part of your business, read on...

Top Tips for Networking

Passion Sells – My toppest of the top of tips is, be passionate and genuine! Obviously I remain professional and relevant to the event I'm attending, but I literally just 'be myself', smile, and let my passion for my businesses shine through. I love people, and I love business – they fascinate me, so I am genuinely interested in hearing the stories and backgrounds of entrepreneurs, career girls, and wedding professionals! Listen to that person and have a warm and honest conversation – don't write them off and think they aren't of any use to you – you never know when someone might ask you for a recommendation for a clairvoyant, a supplier of African beads or a text message marketing expert – all of whom I have actually met!

It's Not all about you! - People who go to networking events and think 'what's in this for me' are like an open book. Yes, the end goal is to get more business, but networking is also great for building social contacts, getting help with different areas of your company, doing favour swaps or even landing your dream job (all of which I have got)! There are people I have met who have given me advice and suggestions I would never dream of considering and would have paid hundreds of pounds worth of business coaching to get my hands on. If you walk in the room with pound signs flashing in your eyes, you won't get far. Networking is about building (connections, business, knowledge) – if you want a quick fix then stay at home. Also, treat people like human beings! It sounds obvious but I was once having a great conversation with another female entrepreneur at an event and a woman barged loudly into our conversation to forcefully hand us her leaflets. We were stunned as we watched her walk around the room in the same rude and bulshy manner. If someone posted a link on your Facebook wall without any words or pleasantries, it would be marked as Spam. Safe to say that leaflet didn't make it home with me that night!

Get Specific – It's not all just workwear and formalities, there are lots of specific networking groups for people of not just your age, gender, location, or all of the above, but also your industry too. Get Googling and you will be surprised at what's out there. If standing in a hotel bar or conference room doesn't float your boat, there are also lots of interesting takes on traditional networking, for example in the South West I have seen networking in the form of a 'Come Dine with me' challenge, a kayaking evening, a pasty and pint at a brewery, as well as canapes at the famous River Cottage!

Be a walking website – People can access your website 24 hours a day, so why can't they access you? Always be on the ball and carry a stash of cards of flyers in your handbag – you never know who you might meet and where you might meet them! I have got business from a pub, a wedding reception and even when buying a car, so treat yourself as a walking website and remember that when you enter the room, you are your brand, your values and your product or service – not everyone has been to your landing page!

Wear your brand – In the same way, what you look like is important! I hate to say it, but it's true – first impressions count and people will remember you if you wear something striking, but that still suits you and your personality. One of our Leading Women network leaders remembers exactly what I was wearing when she first met me – a black and orange floral playsuit and a bright orange blazer with chunky wedges and big hair. I think that was probably because I wasn't wearing tights in March (brrrr!) but hey ho, I stuck in her mind as a bright and slightly crazy person, which is great, because that's what I am! I also have 2 necklaces, one saying '#Tweetme' and the other displaying my Twitter name! I have seen people at events who also only ever wear their brand colours. Sounds obsessive and slightly anal but actually, once you think about it you will be surprised just how often this goes on (Think Richard Branson's Virgin Red, Katie Price's baby pink, and Peter Jones with his range of executive socks – yes really, he has his own range)!

Stay Social – Just because you are face to face, doesn't mean that the beloved smartphone has to stay at home – lots of events have hashtags that you can use to stay in the loop. They are also great for finding out more about that cool girl in the corner of the room who looks like your ideal customer, or the guy opposite you who you are sure you are following but can't quite tell. Hashtags at events and networks bring the online and offline worlds together, and you can get a direct communication route to interesting contacts, without even asking for a card! Also, if a regular event has a Twitter account, look through their followers/following lists and see who goes! You can start to then build relationships before you even join!

There's an app for that – Use apps like Eventbrite or Meetup to find out what events, groups and networks are going on in your area. With the power of geo-location, your nearest meets are literally in the palm of your hand!

Oh, and one last thing, make sure you take some business cards! Sounds super-obvious, right? Wrong! You would be surprised at how many people I have met who say 'they are with the printer' – it's the 'grown up' version of 'the dog ate my homework' - if you don't have business cards, take brochures, flyers, leaflets – something tangible that people can take away with them – you never know who is out there who wants to meet you! (and an additional note from Sophie: Put your twitter handle on your business card! It's the quickest way these days for someone to continue that connection with you! Without it, your card will go into the huge to-do pile and probably get forgotten)

It's Business, Baby - Networking Masterclass with Cassie Lawrence

It's Business, Baby!

This week's It's Business Baby offering comes in the form of a guest post from National Young Businesswoman of the Year, Cassie Lawrence.

Networking – a word that almost seems naked without 'Social' coming first.

This is where it all started people, before Twitter was a mere egg in Jack Dorsey's pre-millionaire mind! For many, 'networking' conjures up images of dusty old men in suits, exchanging business cards with a handshake, and the thought is dismissed as we settle down to Instagram a picture of our coffee. I love Social Media more than anyone else I know – I mean, I was actually in the act of Instagramming as my fiance proposed (the full story is on my blog – naturally!) but I am also a big fan of face to face networking, and it doesn't have to involve grey haired chaps and business breakfasts (although if a free bacon bap is going, count me in!).

My first experience of networking was only 2 years ago, and since then I have gone from almost walking out of that room to loving it so much that I work for a female network that run over 15 meetings a month, just in one county! So what's it all about, what do you 'do', what do you avoid, and frankly, why would you change out of those jammies when you can network via Social Media?

It literally is just a real-life version of what you do online – it's as simple as that! Swap an RT for a verbal recommendation, a hashtag for a tweet-up and a follow for a business card and you are more than halfway there. It's really important that your 'offline you' and your 'online you' match up – I like to think that I fit that bill, although I am still searching for the perfect foundation to give me that 'Amaro'-worthy filter face! Until then, a bit of concealer and a smile will do, and off I go with a bag full of flyers and a tummy full of coffee.

Literally the mot hideous photo of me in existence, but hey, we're just showing that networking is fun!

So, what made me go out for an evening of networking in the first place, back when my degree scroll had barely left my hand? Like the lovely Sophie, I was lucky enough to secure some business funding and I was encouraged to attend a 'speed networking' event held by an organisation the funding body worked with, specialising in events for young businesspeople, called The Hub. As I tentatively entered the hotel function room, straightening my wonky plastic name badge, I wondered what on earth I was doing – everyone was in groups and like any normal human I just assumed that everyone there must of course know each other and I was going to stick out like a sore thumb. I needn't have worried though, because as the name suggests, we would be getting down to some speedy business shortly! With a Diet Coke in hand, I took my place in the row of seats and a whistle was blown every 2 minutes – we had 60 seconds each to introduce ourselves and our business, with an optional card swap, before moving along. This may sound scary, but it was the best thing I could have done – I was thrown in at the deep end and HAD to speak to lots of people, and it was great! It put everyone instantly on the same level and if you didn't really have much in common, it was fine because it would only be a matter of seconds before you met a new face. I can genuinely say that people who I met that night have turned out to be friends and business contacts – in fact I have been booked for a few jobs by one of those contacts with whom I am going out for a business lunch tomorrow!

Some people have networking strategies on how to 'work the room' – there are whole books devoted to it! Just typing 'networking' into Amazon brings up almost 35,000 results! But before you go and fill your bookshelf, I'm just going to say that A. I have never read one, B. I have found networking to be really beneficial to my business and myself as a 'brand', yet (and this is C.) I don't actually have a strategy! What I do have though are a few tips, things to do, consider and look out for. I hope they will at least get you thinking about attending an event and going outside of your comfort zone. They say do something every day that scares you, so do it! Find your nearest event (google! Or, arrange your own!) and sign up to one today!

Guest Post - Kim from Sweet Monday

Hair bands, clips and ties are hair accessories that we wear every day, but a crown like this one is something a little bit special :) And if you're anything like me I have always lusted after the 'festival/boho/chic' flower headbands but never really know quite how to wear them, whether they'd suit me and whether I'd get the wear out of them? So here's my attempt to show the versatility of this head dress.

I absolutely love this Earth, Wind and Fire crown. The detailing is truly beautiful, Sophie is an exceptionally talented lady. I particularly love that fact that it is neutral colours and a simple design, making it versatile when styling. This is my first look, for a casual Summer's day. Teamed with floral print leggings and a plain top, the crown is allowed to shine in all it's glory (excuse the pun!). I would personally wear this ensemble for lunch with friends, or to laze around in the sunshine, maybe to have a picnic or go to the beach.

The second of my looks is a lot more dressy than the previous. The heels add a touch of rock chick to a otherwise girly outfit. This could be worn out for drinks or to a wedding, maybe the evening part! Otherwise without the heels the dress and head band would look beautiful for a wedding or christening, a lovely meal with friends or for a few drinks in the evening sun.
The colours in the crown match perfectly with my dress and the leopard print heels. I think this has to be one of my favourite outfits of late :)

The final look to my 'ways to wear' floral hair crown, I think will be the most popular look as it sums up the summery, festival, hippie vibe!
Tie dye is back massively this Spring/Summer and what better to pair it with than a floral head band. Exactly what I will be wearing to Global Gathering this year. Every festival I've ever been too I've seen lovely ladies wearing hippie tops, short shorts and beautiful head dresses and I've longed to be one of them. Finally maybe this year I'll get my chance with this gorgeous crown. All I want now is my hair to grow down to my bum and I'd fit in perfectly with the happy go lucky crowd! Hmm it'll grow in a few months right?! Sure!

I hope all of my outfits have helped anyone contemplating buying a hair piece from Crown and Glory this Summer.
